What Are Clear Aligners?
Similar to traditional metal braces, Invisalign clear aligners are used by orthodontists to straighten teeth and correct misalignments. They are made of clear, rigid polyurethane plastic that fits comfortably over your teeth. As you wear them, the aligners apply constant pressure to your teeth to guide them to their ideal position, similar to how metal braces do.
What Are the Benefits of Getting Clear Aligners?
Perhaps the biggest benefit of clear dental aligners is that they are an effective way to correct various issues with the alignment of your teeth and bite. Some of the other benefits include:
- Clear aligners are much less noticeable than traditional metal braces, which can attract attention.
- Patients report less pain and discomfort with clear aligners than with braces.
- Tooth straightening is often faster with clear aligners.
- You can remove your Invisalign clear aligners for brushing or flossing, eating, and drinking.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?
Generally, clear aligners are suitable for teens and adults with mild to moderate bite and alignment issues. Only some patients are good candidates for Invisalign. You must visit your orthodontist to determine if clear aligners, like Invisalign, are a good orthodontic treatment option. Clear aligners are best suited for patients who have the following conditions:
- Mild to moderate Crooked Teeth
- Mild to moderate Gaps and Spaces Between Teeth
- An Overbite, Underbite, or Crossbite
Clear teeth straighteners apply steady pressure to the teeth to gently nudge them. This is accomplished with a series of trays designed to increase the pressure in very small increments until the teeth reach their desired position. Each tray is worn for 10 to 14 days for a minimum of 20 hours daily. On average, patients achieve maximum results within 12 to 18 months. However, results may start to be seen in weeks.
